“Mommy, can we do another reading lesson?” There seems to be a whole lot of resources out there to teach your child to read. And I tried a lot of them. But I am so grateful that I stumbled upon this book! My son is five years old and he can read. And when I say read, I mean he can really READ! He reads everything, from billboards, to signs on the wall and books. Real books. Not chapter books yet, because I mean, he’s five. But he can read.

I happened upon this book a little over a year ago and began chipping away at it with my son whenever we had time. But once he caught on, it was like he couldn’t get enough! He would ask every day if we could do another lesson, sometimes twice a day! Now he’s reading on his own. He can sound out all the words in his mind and read the word out loud! I am so impressed!

I introduced to our home school routine. what I would call the BEST book I’ve ever found to teach reading. It’s called Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons.

My son breezed through the beginning of the book because he already knew his letters. Does your child have to know their letters to begin this book? Nope. They don’t have to have any knowledge of reading at all! That’s how amazing it is!

The way this book is laid out is so simple and too easy. You walk through it with them. They learn the basics, they learn to rhyme. And most importantly, they learn to read.

And once it clicks, there’s no stopping them! I sat back in amazement at how easy this was.

What you can expect when you teach your child to read

The lessons are quick so it’s not necessary to block off a bunch of time for them. Each lesson your instructions are in red.

When you begin, you introduce sounds. And at the end of each lesson, they practice writing the sounds. I use a practice writing pad that he can trace letters and then write them on his own.

Then the book will introduce “rhyming” so that your child can add sounds to a letter to make a word.

Lesson 13 is when they read their very first sentence with an accompanying picture.

From there they continue to learn and learn how to read “the fast way”. Where they will sound out words in their head and then say them out loud.

It gets more and more difficult, but since they already have the basics down from the first few lessons it’s not hard.

Tips and best practices

  • In the book, once they start reading, there will be pictures to go along with what they’ve read. I always cover the picture up as to not give them any clues.
  • Make sure you read all the instructions in red. I would get ahead of myself and think that they were the same every time but the book switches it up on you quite often!
  • Let it be a fun experience for your child. I’m not sure about your child, but mine don’t like to learn when mommy is frustrated or pushy. If they don’t understand right away don’t give up. Take a break and come back to it, or try the next day!
  • You can also set up a reward system! For every ten lessons they get through they get a prize. Whether that’s a toy, a treat, or an experience! Motivation is always helpful!

Other resources for a head start

We started out with a simple DVD. And I cannot recommend it enough. It’s called The Letter Factory DVD. It teaches your child all the letters and all their sounds. My oldest watched this a few times a week until he knew all his letters and all their sounds. When he was three we went to the doctor’s office and they had the ABC’s on the wall. Everyone was so impressed with him naming all the letters and sounds!

From there he would practice his writing on a doodle board. Do you know how awesome doodle boards are? They help with how they hold writing utensils. They help with them becoming little artists. And with writing and basic skills. The imagination used on a doodle board is unmatched!

Conclusion

Do you have a child who’s interested in reading but you don’t know what to do? This is so perfect for you. Even if they aren’t interested, the motivation that comes with the progress they make each time they complete a lesson is amazing. If you want to get straight to reading or if they already know their letters then Add Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons to your cart here I cannot recommend this enough. If you want an introduction to make recognizing letters easy first start with The

Letter Factory DVD.

And although the book is completely sufficient by itself, I highly recommend getting a doodle board for them to practice writing on!

If you get this book please let me know how it’s working out for you! I promise to respond to each and every comment!

  1. I used this book back in the 1980’s and 90’s with my crew of 7. I’m delighted to know it’s still available.
